On CNN's HLN, Rep. Ted Lieu explained why he refused to join in on a "moment of silence" for the victims of the Sutherland Springs mass shootings.

The California congressman is sick that after these unconscionable tragedies occur, Congress does nothing more than take a moment of silence and offer prayers to combat these increasing massacres in America.

Host Carol Costello said, "Critics might say that what you pulled is just a stunt."

Rep. Lieu replied, "I happen to be Christian and when I heard the tragic news of the mass shooting in Texas, I prayed for the victims, but I'm no longer going to participate in a brief moment of silence on the house floor."

He continued, "I've been at far too many of them and every time a mass shooting happens we do this moment of silence and that's it. Nothing else happens and to me that is not what we should be doing. We have the power to try to prevent mass shootings by passing reasonable gun safety legislation like a ban on assault riffles, universal background checks and ban on bump-stocks."

Costello replied, "But still, a moment of silence, some people might say you even politicized that."

Ahh, the 'some people might say" line of questioning and how dare you even politicize a moment of silence. Grab your torches and pitchforks!

Rep. Lieu replied, "I view it as doing my job to highlight this issue because you don't want Congress to just do 'moments of silences' every time a mass shooting happens. You want us to take action to try to prevent the shooting from happening in the first place."

What else is a conscientious member of Congress supposed to do with the unmitigated compliance by the Republican party to their NRA masters and do nothing every time a nut opens fire on innocent civilians except to claim we need more guns on our streets and in our churches.

I'd say Rep. Lieu's actions are having the intended effect.

I imagine the right-wing media complex will go apoplectic any minute now.

Rep. Ted Lieu is one of the best in Congress.

He's on our Worthy Incumbents fundraising page.

there are a small handful of Democratic incumbents in swing districts who need help. That's what this page is all about. These men and women have done a good job and they deserve to be reelected.
